Who can create a Dataset?

VRE members with the Project Collaborator, Project Administrator, or Platform Administrator role can create Datasets.

How to create a new Dataset

New Datasets are empty containers that are ready for you to add Project data files and/or folders.

1. After logging into the VRE, click Datasets from the VRE top main menu to open the Datasets landing page.  
2. Click + Create, located in the upper right-hand corner. 
3. Complete the Define Dataset fields:
   • Title, Dataset Code, and Authors.  The field Dataset Code is immutable.  All other metadata fields can be edited later in the Metadata tab.
   • Dataset Type. If your Dataset follows the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) configuration and you wish to use the VRE's built-in BIDS validation tool, select "BIDS" from the dropdown menu.  If BIDS is not selected, the default type "GENERAL" is assigned.
4. Complete the Description of Dataset fields 
   • Dataset Description (mandatory): A text description of the dataset (do not enter sensitive personal health information in this field).
   • Other descriptive fields (optional): Modality, Collection Method, License and Tags.  Modality, Collection Method and License are based on the OpenMINDS standard.
5. Click Create in the upper right-hand corner to save your Dataset.  

Your Dataset is now saved and can be viewed in the list of My Datasets in the Datasets landing page.  You can now begin to add data to your Dataset.

" class="xwiki-metadata-container">Note: A Dataset is private and is accessible only to the VRE member who created it.  It can be shared with others by download, provided an appropriate data processing agreement has been established with the recipient.

How to add files and folders to a Dataset

Data from a Project's VRE Core zone storage can be added to a Dataset using the Project File Explorer.  This process adds a copy of the selected data file(s) or folder(s) to the Dataset, so the original data stored in the VRE Core folder is not affected by any subsequent manipulations of the data in the Dataset.  Similarly, changing or deleting the data from the VRE Core zone does not affect data that has already been added to a Dataset.

To add data to your Dataset: 

1. Open the VRE Project containing the data to be included in the Dataset.
2. Navigate to the Project File Explorer and click into the Core zone.
3. From the Core zone, click the checkbox next to the file(s) and/or folder(s) that you wish to copy to your Dataset.
4. Click Add to Datasets.  A popup appears with a dropdown menu listing the Datasets you have previously created.  If no Datasets appear in the dropdown, return to How to create a new Dataset and follow the steps to create a new Dataset.  
5. Select the destination Dataset for your selected files/folders.
6. Click Add to Dataset.  If a file with the same name already exists in the Dataset, it will be skipped and will not be added to the Dataset.

Your Dataset is now created.  You can return to the Datasets Canvas for further actions including:

• Annotating the Dataset with a pre-defined or custom metadata schemas.  See: Annotations and Metadata Schemas
• Publishing new versions or download previous versions of your Dataset using the Dataset Versioning feature
• Viewing a history of all changes made to your Dataset in the Activity Stream
