About VRE Datasets
In the VRE, Datasets are defined as structured collections of files, folders, and metadata annotations that can be organized in a customized fashion independent of the Project folder structure. The VRE Dataset feature allows VRE members to add and organize project data, enrich the collection with annotations, validate data structures, and create multiple tracked versions.
General workflow for VRE Datasets
The general workflow for working with Datasets is described in Figure 1. Details on each step are described in subpages.

Key requirements and restrictions for VRE Datasets
- Any VRE member with Project Collaborator, Project Administrator, or Platform Administrator role can create a Dataset.
- Datasets can only be viewed and edited by the Dataset creator. Future releases of the VRE will include expanded options for Dataset sharing and collaboration.
- A Dataset can only contain data files and folders from one VRE Project.
- Datasets can only contain files and folders from the Project's Core zone storage.
- Datasets can be annotated with metadata. Metadata can be stored in the VRE Default Schemas, custom schema, or by uploading a supported* external standard metadata schema. *Currently, the EBRAINS openMINDS schema is supported.
- All changes to a Dataset and its metadata are tracked; provenance can be reviewed in the Dataset Provenance Activity Stream.
- As you build and modify a Dataset, you can save multiple snapshots or versions
